IMS BEARING

The 996 and early 997.1 flat-six carries an IMS bearing that fails without warning. We perform ILK retrofit before failure — not after catastrophic engine damage. Every 996/997.1 in our shop gets an IMS assessment.

BORE SCORING DETECTION

M96 and M97 engines suffer bore scoring — cylinder wall damage that causes oil consumption and eventual seizure. We inspect every affected engine with a borescope before quoting any major service.

PDK SERVICE

PDK fluid degrades faster than Porsche admits. We use correct fluid specification, perform mechatronic unit inspection, and run adaptation resets after every service — steps most shops skip. 997.2 and 981/982 owners: we also inspect the DFI (direct fuel injection) carbon buildup at every major service interval.

When should a Porsche PDK transmission be serviced?

Porsche PDK fluid should be changed every 30,000–40,000 miles for enthusiast driving, or every 50,000 miles for street use. Porsche specifies PDK as a ‘lifetime fill’ but real-world data shows fluid darkens and clutch wear particles accumulate. Neglect leads to shudder, engagement hesitation, and eventual mechatronic damage. We use genuine Porsche-approved ATF and perform a full flush.

What is the IMS bearing and should I be concerned on my 996 or 997?

The Intermediate Shaft (IMS) bearing supports the intermediate shaft in M96/M97 flat-six engines (1997–2008 Boxster, Cayman, 911). Failure is typically catastrophic and without warning. We recommend an IMS retrofit for any affected vehicle that hasn’t had one — we use the LN Engineering ceramic bearing kit or IMS Solution depending on engine variant.

What oil specification does Porsche require?

Most Porsche engines specify Mobil 1 0W-40 (Porsche A40 standard). Some newer 9XX turbos with variable valve timing require 0W-20 low-SAPS oil (C6 spec). Using the wrong viscosity can trigger VVT faults and accelerate IMS oil starvation on older engines. We verify the correct spec for your specific model year before every service.

My 997 or 987 is overheating — what should I check first?

Water-cooled Porsche flat-sixes have known cooling vulnerabilities: the coolant reservoir degrades and cracks with age, and the coolant temperature sensor can fail silently. For 997.1 and 987.1, also inspect the rear main seal and water pump housing for coolant loss. We recommend a full cooling system pressure test on any vehicle over 60,000 miles or 8 years old.
